We are a proudly Kenyan business
We take seawater or salty borehole water and clean it using the best available technologies from here, there and anywhere we find it. Some of our stuff is Swiss / American. Some is from UK and Italy. But the brainpower is from Kenya! And we power this equipment with sunshine wherever it makes sense.
We don’t provide bottles because we think Kenya has enough plastic waste already.
Our water is the same quality as bottled water, but much cheaper because we don’t truck it all over the place, then charge you for blocking the roads and leave you with a waste disposal problem. [Fun fact: if the KRA didn’t tax drinking water it would be even cheaper!]
How do you get some?
You pay with MPESA to charge up your glug account. You use the plastic keyring tag at the glugstation. We know that water is heavy so we put the glugstations in TotalEnergies service stations. Now you can really fill up when you fill up.
You pay only KES 8/litre or KES 160/20 litres. But you only get water. So bring your own mutungi and take it all home.
Want to know more?
What is ‘Glug’?
Glug is a brand of good quality, safe, drinking water that has low environmental impact and is trying to reduce plastic bottled water consumption.
What do you do to the water to clean it and make it safe?
We take our source water and put it through a few steps to remove saltiness, pathogens and suspended particles. These include filtration, reverse osmosis and disinfection.
Are there any chemicals used in production?
No, we don’t use chemicals to clean the water. Unlike standard reverse osmosis systems we use very low power systems that do not require chemicals to keep them operating (they use less power than a refrigerator!). Our equipment is designed to avoid adding more chemicals to our environment.
Why is it different?
We use less power to clean the water and we don’t use chemicals. But the water is just that – water. It’s got no germs, no chemicals and doesn’t come in a ‘plastic beach pollution unit’ (bottle). Our water doesn’t block drains with bottles, or block roads with trucks. It doesn’t kill wildlife. What’s not to like? glug – glug – glug!
Where do you get the source water from?
We can use almost any source of water. Usually we use local groundwater and we get it by drilling a borehole on or near the site where we want to sell from. That means we don’t waste fuel and money by trucking water around.
We can use seawater if we have to, as our equipment can turn it into lovely fresh drinking water.
Why don’t you sell bottles of water?
We don’t believe that the world needs more plastic. So we want you to re-use containers that you already have. Bring them to the Glugstation and fill them up. Again… and again…
How do I get some?
We don’t take cash at the Glugstations. Instead you will need to get a tag from the Glugger in charge of the station and top it up using M-PESA. When you want water, just place the tag on the sensor and choose your tap. Then out comes your water. How you get it home is up to you.
Where is it available?
Water is heavy, so some people prefer to collect water when they have a vehicle. That’s why we sell our water at TotalEnergies service stations. When you fill your car with fuel, fill up with water too. Reduce your travelling.
How much does it cost?
We aim to produce water at a low cost. Currently our target is KES 8/litre or KES 160/20 litres. But 57% of that is tax. Crazy, hey? If you agree, ask the KRA why they tax drinking water so much via Twitter at “@KRACare”. Maybe if enough of us complain they will reduce this tax and we can bring the price down further.
Why so cheap?
We have very low operating costs and we don’t move millions of plastic bottles around in trucks. We could get the price down even more, but those pesky taxes…
Do you adhere to any quality standards?
Yes, our water is the same quality as bottled water, but without the plastic! We adhere to Kenyan bottled water standards and the World Health Organisation’s guidelines for drinking water quality (read more…).
Why do you do this?
We love you! And we love the planet. Too many people can’t get good quality water at a sensible price. And there are too many plastic bottles lying around. So we want Glug to try and help fix these two problems. It just so happens that we can do it using almost any water that we can find.
What am I missing?
Nothing. Glug – good quality drinking water.
No mess, no fuss, no plastic, just pure clean water. glug – glug – glug!
